New to Massage? Start Here.
If massage is new to you, you may have questions. What happens when you arrive? What do you wear? Are you supposed to talk? How much pressure should you expect? What if you don't know what you need? You don’t have to know any of that before you begin.
This guide is to help you understand the experience, feel comfortable asking questions, and discover what therapeutic touch might mean for you.
Before Your Massage
You don't need to do anything complicated to prepare. Come as you are, but give yourself enough time to arrive without feeling rushed.
A Few Suggestions:
Avoid arriving overly full.
Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to change out of.
Use the restroom before disrobing and lying on the table.
What Happens During a Massasge?
Before your massage begins, you’ll have a brief conversation with your Massage Therapist about how you're feeling and what you'd like from your experience. Then you'll have privacy to disrobe and prepare for your massage.
During the massage, you'll be appropriately draped, with only the area being worked on uncovered. Your comfort matters throughout the experience.
You are always welcome to communicate. Want more pressure? Say so. Want less? Say so. Something doesn't feel comfortable? Let your Massage Therapist know. Need to adjust your position? Ask. You never have to “tough it out.”
And what about talking during a massage?
Some people like to chat. Some prefer quiet. Some do a little of both. Your Massage Therapist will follow your lead. There's no right answer. Your massage is your time.
What If I’m Not Sure What I Need?
Don’t worry! You don't need to walk in knowing.
That's your Massage Therapist’s job — to have a conversation with you and help you understand your options. You can simply say: “I'm new to massage, and I'm not really sure what I need.” That’s enough to begin.
And sometimes the first massage is less about knowing exactly what you need and more about learning what your body responds to.
After Your Massage…..
Give Yourself a Little Space
When your massage is finished, take your time getting up.
You may feel relaxed, lighter, sleepy, energized, or simply more aware of your body.
There's no single “correct” response.
Drink some water and, if you can, resist the temptation to immediately rush into the next thing.
Give yourself a few minutes to notice:
What do I feel?
What did I notice?
What felt good?
What would I want differently next time?
That's part of learning your body, too.
Your First Massage Is Just a Beginning.
Maybe your first experience simply helps you discover what massage feels like.
Maybe you notice how much tension you've been carrying.
Maybe you realize you need more opportunities to slow down.
Maybe you discover that you like reconnecting with your body in this way.
Maybe you discover that you don’t really like this kind of touch.
There's no need to figure it all out today. We're simply inviting you to begin.
Your body has been talking. Let's start listening.
